Editor’s Corner: Have a Coke and a Smile
I'm pretty cynical when it comes to multinational corporations' marketing campaigns. I figure that they're driven by the desire to make ever-growing amounts of money, so when Coca-Cola, for example, claims to want to "foster cultural and artistic exchange between artists from around the world, to express the global connections embodied in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games," my first thought is that Coke is more interested in strengthening its position in the huge Chinese market.
And yet... The Olympics are a unique global event, and Coke's WE8 project does give unprecedented exposure to the Chinese visual artists who designed these limited-edition bottles:
Since this is 2008, there's an accompanying Web site where you can design your own Coke bottle. For an online app, it gives you a crazy amount of interactive power over the canned elements and effects, and the interface's terminology is surprisingly sophisticated ("use red channel," for instance):
